Thanks for your comments Marc and Hrag. Personally, I think it is more fruitful to not blame so much (as we are want to do too easily with capitalism, gallery and museum systems, etc.) and instead be brave enough to come up with a new model, period. But tension is good here because we're all fighting the same battle (though it doesn't appear that way sometimes:-). Speaking to a few Canadian artists friends, the general sentiment seems to be that their system does work to a reasonable degree. None of the artists I spoke to are members of CARCC, though, stating that only "geeks" joined and paid the membership dues. Instead, the organization serves the same purpose by instilling fear in institutions that don't willingly comply in some way, as the legal wing of the Canadian system seems to have much more leverage in protecting artists than over here. In response to the comedy troupe and Hollywood, I really can't imagine that copyright infringement laws there would be so narrowly defined?

Re: W.A.G.E. citing Canadian Artists’ Representation / Le Front des artistes canadiens (CARFAC) & the 1988 Canadian Artists’ Representation Copyright Collective (CARCC) as a good model.

The truth is that the Canadian model is actually quite awful and discourages all sorts of issues that art bloggers, artists and others should enjoy in a contemporary society, including taking pictures in museums. Last December, one comedy troupe member in Toronto complained to me that copyright laws in Canada are so backward that comedy troupes can't spoof Hollywood movies in their acts for fear of copyright infringement. Everything is NOT rosy north of the border.

Trong, I really enjoyed this interview! It is pretty great, especially feeling elements of tension between your perspective as a culture work and W.A.G.E.'s platform. Thanks for the interview and displaying the difficult relationship between institutions and artists.
