I’ve long been a fan of Whitehead, and have included the work in a couple of exhibitions. She is willing to operate in an expanded discourse, one might say she seeks out the discourse for the art to operate in.

Whitehead’s list of what artists “know” reads much like traits sought in today’s “knowledge workers” or a want ad for an advertising executive in social media. And while the traits might indeed be valuable “to the world at large” (for highly specific economic reasons)they are hardly “unique.” A number of critiques come to mind – Martha Rosler’s e-flux piece from early this year, Brian Holmes’s “Flexible Personality”, Lane Relyea’s “Your Art World” and on and on.

Thank you for this, Claudine! Please feature more articles on artists like Frances — this was an exceptional post that really helped to articulate a type of practice that needs more attention for the simple reason that it is so difficult to frame as explicitly art.
