In the first weekly roundup of 2011: a Cai Guo Qiang New Year’s celebration in Taipei, Barry McGee in Brazil, two artists make art “scherenschnitte,” Richard Serra is ready for TV, and more.

  • Barry McGee gives us a video, Transfer SP Brasil, that documents his time in  Sao Paulo this past summer for the Transfer exhibition.

  • Cai Guo Qiang presented a 90-minute 2011 New Year’s Eve gala celebration in Taipei.  “Respecting life, heaven and earth” was the theme of the event, which highlighted natural disasters such as the 7.3-magnitude earthquake of September 21, 1999 and the catastrophic flood caused by Typhoon Morakot in 2009.

  • Kara Walker and William Kentridge contribute their well-known silhouettes to a new exhibition dedicated exclusively to contemporary cutouts at Hamburger Kunsthalle.  Scherenschnitte, or “paper cuts,” explores different ways in which artists deal with form and content within the “cutout” medium.  This exhibition is on view until February 6, 2011.
  • Martin Puryear is exhibiting work in Page Bond Gallery’s Broadband 10/11, a group exhibition of paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture.  The aims to communicate the idea that there is a broad band of artists in the show, stretching across multiple disciplines and dimensions, from 2010 and 2011.  The show is on view until January 29, 2011.
  • Richard Serra has a piece in Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona’s Are you Ready for TV?. This exhibition features artists who have “taken over the television medium to force it to speak another language and provoke a fertile irritation.”  The show also has several extension projects: a website, a Twitter account, a publication, a Vimeo video channel, and Zero TV.  This exhibition runs until April 25, 2011.
