WOW! A brave, honest answer! I concur heavily on this article. I wrote an essay on Singapore's Art for the last 30 years and yes, I believe there was a LULL period in the Arts scene that assisted in eradicating strong conceptual artists in Singapore from becoming progressive. I believe this Lull Period was brought in to build the culture of Creative Industries where Media and Design are the only form of creativity that is allowed to flourished IF they are economically viable. I think those 10 years cost a lot of LOSS for Singapore culturally. The younger generation now are quite displaced when it comes to intuitive artistic capabilities as their formative years was not as culturally indepth as the older generation. As an artist myself I feel very angry about it. But I am progressively trying doing something to make it better, independently. Kai Lam,thanks for being strong. Once in awhile when I read about artists like you and especially from Singapore, I weep in happiness.. be strong and perservere, JB Jeyeratnam did, even on his deathbed. :) He is indeed a wonderful and highly respected man. I wish there are more like him too. Let us whinge, whinge all the way.
