Christ’s miracle of multiplying bread and fishes to feed a multitude is imagined as a monumental act of breaking. The loaf here resembles a stone plinth that has been cracked in two. The black background propels the action even as it spills forth darkness. “This is my body which is broken for you.” says Jesus at the last supper as he breaks bread. The miracle of the feeding of the multitude foreshadows the ritual of the ingesting of the body and blood of God.
