Paintings worth millions were stolen in Madrid, BP ended its 26-year sponsorship of the Tate, and the Met is opening its Breuer building on Friday. It’s a busy time for art!

  • Yesterday Hauser & Wirth held the grand opening of their first gallery in LA, Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. The inaugural exhibition Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women, 1947 – 2016 includes work by Ruth Asawa, Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, and Liz Larner.
  • A collaboration with the British Museum, the exhibition Pharaoh: King of Ancient Egypt opened yesterday at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
  • An exhibition celebrating dance is opening on Sunday at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Dance! American Art 1830 – 1960 includes work by John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Isamu Noguchi, and Jasper Johns.
  • An immersive exhibition of works by Afghan artists opened last week at the Smithsonian’s Sackler Museum of Asian Art in Washington, DC. Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan houses the woodwork, calligraphy, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles of artists revitalizing their nation’s cultural legacy.
